On The Wicket

Took a walk across the village recreation ground past the cricket ground at the Hampshire village of Wellow today on my way to buy a Sunday paper . . . and it was something of a shock to find the cricket pavilion which has been the sole building on the rec had gone.
It had been there as long as I can remember and admittedly there has been talk over recent months of the village club getting a brand new pavilion.
Even so although home is only a stone’s throw from the ground, I had missed the fact that at last it had been demolished to make way for the replacement pavilion.
Parish Council chairman, Councillor Gaye Chesterton-Kay said in the latest on-line parish newsletter that once demolished it would be full steam ahead to get the new pavilion ready for next year’s season.

I am sure that members of the Wellow and Plaitford Cricket Club will welcome the new pavilion, and richly deserve a new home, since the adult team were unbeaten in the division of the county league this season in which they play. They won all nine of their fixtures, which made a top-of-the table finish for the second successive season since the Club’s reconstruction last year.
