What on earth is this?

We had a brief, hot and sunny spell just before lunch today and it seemed to bring all the little bird babies out to try the apple on the deck rail.

They are not really babies any more as they have fledged and can feed themselves (sometimes with a bit of effort). A pecking order was quickly established although not seriously adhered to and seemed to be organised mainly by size..

The blackbird chicks were the most dominant although at one stage a blackbird chick and a thrush chick  pecked away side by side. In the short period I watched them, there was a blackbird chick, two thrush chicks, a sparrow chick and a green finch chick all taking a turn at sampling the apple.

While waiting for a turn, they are quite happy to sit on the deck rail. I wonder when they lose that ability to co-exist peacefully.

In the extra, the thrush chick is really getting stuck into the apple.
