Rydal Hall Grotto

This is the view that awaits visitors to the little grotto in the grounds of Rydal Hall near Ambleside. One opens the door into a small wood-panelled room. Opposite is this window which looks onto the waterfall of Low Falls. The Grade II listed grotto was built in 1682 to impress visitors to the Hall. They were led through gardens in such a way that the view of the waterfall was not visible until the door was opened. With all the recent rain, it looked impressive today.

The building is unique. It is Britain's earliest known purpose built viewing station.
