Knitting for a home
I was chatting with this homeless lady who, with her partner, was evicted from their flat for rent arrears and because they used a toaster in a hostel setting off a fire alarm and unwittingly breaking the rules. Many people stop and provide hot drinks or a sandwich and there is currently a crowdfunding initiative to try to get them into accommodation. The local council says they are the responsibility of the neighbouring local authority that evicted them so nothing is done. The local paper has highlighted their case but in the meantime she sits all day knitting in the street to try to raise some money and sleeping in a tent at night (although I heard that local youths had vandalised that.) There are now fifteen people in this small town that are homeless and that will rise if the Universal Credit problems are not quickly resolved.
