The Edge of the Wold

Ingleborough

A clear night with temperatures falling promised a misty morning worth climbing the Knott early enough to see the sun rise (now well to the south of Ingleborough). We were not disappointed. Most days when I have stood looking down from the top of the hill I have been in a hurry to get back for work. Today I had the leisure to stay longer and watch how the mist rolled and seeped through the valleys, and how as the sun rose higher, beams of light slanted through the mist.

At the other end of a sunny, mild late October day, we went in search of the starling roost. There were impressive numbers coming in, though tonight they did not coalesce into a super-organism pulsing and whirling in the sky, but quickly settled in the reedbeds.  The way they drop out of the sky is impressive in itself as is the sound of thousands of chattering voices. The viewpoint is more accessible than I expected, we shall go back for a blippable photo.
