Pompeii

I've wanted to visit Pompeii for almost as long as I can remember.  It's the kind of story that captures the imagination of a young kid - a city smothered in ash by a volcano.  

So today was one ticked off the bucket list.  A day in Pompeii.  We got there pretty early, so it wasn't too crowded initially, but by the time I took this photo it was mid-afternoon and the tour groups were massing in force.

The aspect that surprised me the most was how complete it was.  I had imagined large empty spaces between buildings of note, but instead you're just going past building after building, street after street.  And it's huge.
