Sandwich
Today M and l went over to the medieval town of Sandwich. Mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086 the town has retained a lot of its old worlde charm in spite of the best efforts of the town council. In 1467 the town was attacked and sacked by the French, the army coming from Honfleur, a town with which it is now twinned.
In the 1500s Flemish and Walloon refugees arrived in Sandwich bringing with them skills in weaving (hence today's blip). These refugees were known as 'stranger's and at one stage there were more Stranger's living in Sandwich than English.
However, Sandwich is best known for exactly that - the sandwich - supposedly invented by John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich when out hunting one day and needing a quick snack, (l don't suppose it was as a good as the bacon and brie sandwich l had there today).
Thomas Paine of The Rights of Man fame lived here before moving to America.
