Selfies from the Brink

The Third Day

On the third day, we ate, and drank, and gathered to make sure no one had changed their prayer. Again, our prayers hadn’t been returned to us that night. We were worried.
After our meeting we went home and read The Lives of the Saints to our children. And as always we concluded family devotions telling our children: “You don’t want the saints messing with our lives. As you’ve just heard, you can’t trust them. They are insane. They disrupt the natural order of society. We can take care of ourselves. We don’t need them. We don’t want them. Don’t change your prayers.”
(Responsible parenting included checking on our children’s prayers when they were returned unanswered. Now, after two nights of unreturned prayers, parents began to point fingers at other people’s children, accusing liberal parents of being lax. Religious education wasn’t something you played around with.)
At night, we lit the lights and basked in the artificiality of entertainment. We danced and clapped our hands while we waited for the morning.
