Treasure Island?
Today the sun appeared and the wind of the last 24 hours was much calmer. We decided to try to make the most of the more friendly forecast by taking the walk along the shore from Emsworth to Langstone. I’d completed the walk several years ago, from the other direction but had forgotten the way. It takes you first near to oak woodland - which seems amazingly tolerant of the salty atmosphere, then on to the foreshore. The light was so clear we could easily see across to Portsmouth and the Spinnaker Tower. The wind was still quite lively so there were not many boats out, just a few hardy wind surfers.
This is the view near the end of the walk, across to Langstone. It is an area steeped in history. The ruins of this wooden jetty are one of a number along the shore. Further along there is the ‘wadeway’ – a causeway linking Langstone with Hayling Island. Its been carbon dated to early Medieval times. I could sit for hours here, watching the light on the water and in the sky, the birds and boats and passers-by. It is a special place for Andy too – he used to regularly sail here as a teenager. He belonged to the local sailing club and recalls racing here and doing treasure hunts. He also recalls taking horse riding lessons along the shore - in the days when he dreamed of being a jockey!
