Monemvasia

Two amazing ruined cities in less than 24 hours!

The fortified city of Monemvasia was built on top of a rocky island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The upper city was abandoned after it was liberated from the Turks during the Greek was of independence in 1821. Like Mystras it is fairly well preserved, and you are able to wander freely.
The small town at the bottom of the hill is functional and inhabited, and really gives a feeling of what those narrow medieval streets might have been like (minus the smell).
