Harecastle Tunnel
Harecastle Tunnel, one and a half miles long, was in its day the longest canal tunnel of its kind. It is still used but not open all the time.
Legend has it that is haunted by a young woman who was murdered and decapitated. Her body was thrown into Gilbert's Hole in the tunnel.
Some boatmen would take long detours to avoid the tunnel and tunnel keepers would relate tales of occasional mismatches in the number of boats going in and the number coming out!
