A Loss
So sad this morning to hear that Gord Downie, frontman for The Tragically Hip, passed away. He was a Canadian treasure: a great poet, a social activist, an advocate for reconciliation with Indigenous people, a recipient of the Order of Canada, He was honoured by Indigenous people and given a Lakota spirit name, Wicapi Omani, which means “Man who walks among the stars.” He was a star.
Prime Minister Trudeau paid tribute to Downie, demonstrating the emotion that many people who knew him and fans felt on hearing the news.
I love many of the Hip songs, but my favourite is Bobcaygeon. I always think of these lyrics when we're star-gazing with our granddaughters:
"...I saw the constellations
Reveal themselves, one star at time."
I heard recently on the CBC that the reason Downie chose Bobcaygeon for this song was that it rhymed with "constellation." An interesting little fact.
This tribute was in the window of Moaut's. It's not a great photo but I wanted to honour Gord Downie. I tried to get rid of as many of the reflections as I could. On August 21, 2016, I wrote about watching The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration and included an extra of Downie that I took from the tv. I'm adding it as an extra here.
What weather we're having today! Pouring rain and windy. I was lucky to get a blip outside.
