Real life CSI New York

Having never been to NYC before, we decided that we would go for 6 days to be able to explore at a leisurely pace. On arrival we went for a walk as we weren't able to get into our hotel room.
We wandered around and ended up at the Empire State Building where the end of the street cordoned off by police and numerous TV crews and news reporters.
A couple of hours before there had been a shooting with 2 people dead and 11 injured!
