pies it is then

I spotted this instruction on the calendar a few days ago.  I notice this morning that she’d added a comment about sausages.

This wasn’t my first choice for a blip.  I had something much more ‘arty’ in mind.  But fate intervenes;  the moving finger writes and having writ, moves on.

Anniemay’s off to see her mum for a few days.  She’s loading up the car with all the things she might need for a 6 month stay at the far end of the Earth.  I’m in the garage just hanging around in that awkward period between someone preparing to leave and actually going.

I notice an amazing shadow on the garage wall.  I call to her not to close the garage door as I rush indoors to get my camera.  We say our goodbyes and I line up the shot.  I’m just about to press the shutter when the shadow disappears from my viewfinder.

It takes me a moment to realise that what I had seen was a reflection of the sun bouncing off the rear window of the car, passing through a bike wheel and projecting the image onto the garage wall.  You have to imagine this, because it’s gone now, along with her.

I call her back - she waves.  I gesticulate, shout and make appropriate gestures.  She waves even more excitedly as she heads up the road - probably thinking that I’m a romantic old fool who can’t bare to see her go.  I just want her to back the car up so I can get my shot.

I’m on the drive now miming as she turns the corner, hand out of the window still waving.  And then she’s gone.

So … pies it is then.

(Anniemay, when you read this you’ll see I had no choice).
