Bathing steps

These steps lead from the palace of St Michael and St George in Corfu town to the beach below. The palace was built in 1819 as a residence for the British Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. It became a royal residence in 1864 at the union of Corfu with the Kingdom of Greece. It is now a museum and its gardens a welcome shady retreat for the dusty heat of the town for anyone who cares to wander in its grounds.
