Growing old disgracefully

By GOD

THOREAU

Yes, he of Walden fame.  The Professor's friend who is sadly no longer with us had a recent exhibition and his widow sent us some of the literature.

I remember being childishly delighted to discover that Thoreau, who  said,  'went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived'',  actually settled just a mile out of town and took his washing home regularly to his Mother.  It seems  'The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation' and having their laundry done for them.

But seriously, Walden is full of treasures and I frequently quote Thoreau.
