Thai Spirit House

This is the strangest Spirit House I have ever encountered in this country! Which spirit are we celebrating here? 
The collection of zebras is simply amazing. As for the Thai elephants, they have their trumps up as a sign of reverence. Some more, there are two kinds of pachyderms: the whites and the blacks.
So perhaps it is only the spirits of duality both species represent. On the one hand, we have the Asian elephant standing for the purity of whiteness. And on the other hand, we have the black and white stripes of the African zebra out of the 'Dark Continent'.
In Bali, the two guardian demons protecting the entrance to temples wear a black and white sarong, a symbol of Man's duality.
I have no other explanation to offer here. Just an attempt to interpret this oddity.
