Box Brownie
Working at home today.
The couple of hours saved not travelling give me extra time to catch up with a few things...today I dipped a toe into GIMP (image processing thingy).
Since beginning Blip, I have been astonished by lots of the images and hopefully will learn along the way how to take 'better' pictures. But I will admit to a conflict about the whole processing thing...when does a photograph stop becoming a photograph and become an illustration? graphic design? Is there a difference? Does it matter?
I love the idea of straight out of the camera, but am equally seduced by the magic and creativity that can be achieved by processing. Then looking at the menu in GIMP I was struck by the 'dodge' and 'burn' tools. Even pictures out of a Box Brownie could be processed by hovering little scraps of paper on wire over areas to be less exposed to light in the darkroom, altered to suit the eye of the photographer.
I suppose that what it comes down to, cameras can lie and that's what is exciting about making images that please, disturb, make us laugh, fill us with awe or delight.
I think I may give processing a go, but with a short leash for now (besides, the manual is 500+ pages, that's a lot of travelling time).
p.s. This Brownie has not been GIMPed.
