A Day Worth Recording

Arundel

Visited Arundel Castle today - woo this place is vast!

Originally built by Roger de Montgomery (part of the deal when being given a third of Sussex) after the Norman conquest to defend the port that Arundel was at the time, it is still occupied.  The Victorians rebuilt quite a lot of it into a stately home which is the part still occupied by the Duke of Norfolk (that must be a hell of a commute...) and there's a wing that seems to be privately rented out.

The gardens are fascinating as is the half-a-church.  The church (top left of blip, with the cathedral behind it) is half in the grounds and half outside.  The inside half is Catholic; the outside half is Protestant, separated by a gated iron screen that has supposedly been locked for 400 years except for a very few occasions.
