Amanita muscaria
The fly fungus (Amanita muscaria) is a striking mushroom that is common in the low countries.
Flying fungi usually grow in deciduous forests, in close association (symbiosis) with birch, tame chestnut, oak, beech, also with pine and spruce. They form an ectomycorrhiza, which means that the mycelium does not penetrate into the roots of the tree, but surrounds the hair roots on the outside.
The best known appearance of the fly fungus is a dark red hat with white dots. The white dots are remnants of the universal casing (velum universal) in which the mushroom was "locked up" before rising from the ground. These rinse in a rainy weather quite quickly from the hat. However, the color of the hat is variable and may vary from red to orange with yellow tones.
