The Edge of the Wold

Sylvan Gus

It's been too long since Gus featured on my main blip photo. It was a bright, almost cloudless morning early on, and here was Gus waiting patiently, with his ears backlit by the rising sun, while the photographer faffed.

We had a busy day of walks, Wifie has been away all week, and I have to keep Gus active or else he misses her too much. There was a big tide today, and it looked like a good opportunity to meet up with the Arnside Bore (the other Arnside Bore, you might think). We went along the sea wall to the beginning of the viaduct, where there is to my mind the best vantage point for watching the bore come all the way from Blackstone Point when the siren is blown, past Ashmeadow and the prom to the pier, and then finally with a powerful surge through the viaduct as it heads upstream to Sandside. I've included a few shots in the extras.

The bore is best experienced to be appreciated, it's not easy to do it justice in a still photograph.  It isn't a high bow wave, today it was perhaps 30 cm in height.  But the speed and power of its travel never cease to surprise, and the massive churning action makes it quietly roar.   The viaduct piers funnel it and here it looks at its most awesome. There were no canoeists out today, but you have to admire those brave enough to shoot the rapids between the piers.
