Shadow Play
Went up to London yesterday to see the Munch exhibition at the Tate and meet some friends for a long gossipy lunch afterwards .
The Munch was enlightening and interesting ... what was most surprising was his photography. His photographs, mostly self portraits, seemed very modern. He made use of double exposure and other techniques and often appeared as a ghostly figure. Latterly, he also took self portraits by holding the camera at arms length - much like we do nowadays with mobile phones! His paintings also often had a cinematic perspective, with the characters coming directly toward the viewer as if stepping out of a film.... fascinating. he was so interested in ways of seeing and in expressing feeling, I wonder what he would be doing if he lived now?
After spending time with Munch, we went to have a look at the newly opened
"Tanks" in the bowels of the building. This was the area where fuel was stored for the power station and which has been transformed into an epic space for performance art and "installations".
There were several rooms down dark corridors with various things going on ... in one was this piece called Light Music by Lis Rhodes.
Basically it was two projectors directly opposite one another in a very dark room with theatrical smoke in the air. They projected light was sometimes broken by dark marks. The sound was to play the "music" in the light. Each projector projected opposite wall. The idea was that people could step into the light and become part of the whole thing. Some people were unsure, but this chap saw the photographic potential and was in there with his camera (a blipper?).
The a little girl ran in and started playing in the light, so I took some shots of her too.
I like the mysterious effect this creates and struggled to chose one to blip, you can see the others here
What a fun day! More like this please.......
