Canadian!
A long time ago, maybe last December, Rob decided to apply for proof of Canadian Citizenship. Both his parents were Canadian born, but they moved to England after the war and when Rob was born they chose British citizenship for him, although his brothers and sisters are Canadian.
He never really thought about it until recently, maybe with all the Brexit nonsense, we decided to see if he could claim his citizenship.
Easier said than done!
First, produce parents birth certificate.
No one knew where they were.
In that case, produce death certificate in order to apply for birth certificate. See above.
Apply to register office for death certificate. The easy bit actually.
Discover that name on death certificate does not match name at birth! The family decided to adopt a hyphen in their name, during the period of disruption during the war years, so no official records were kept. Hmmm tricky. But it turns out that notifications in the London Gazette were deemed to be official records at that time, and remarkably the appropriate one was available on line!
Send all this off to Alberta where father was born and wait. For quite a long time. But eventually, a beautiful birth certificate arrived, looking rather like our new £5 notes with hologram etc.
Ok so we had now reached step one, produce fathers birth certificate !
Then it was a relatively straightforward collecting of proof of relationship, proof of identity, sworn declaration, ££££ and send it all off to Canada House for forwarding to Canada and a short (5 month) wait during which we visited the old home country!
Today Rob checked the online site again and they say that the process is complete and the certificate is on its way!
Can't wait to see the real thing!
Then it will be the no doubt simple procedure for applying for a passport....
