Box Tunnel

We went to Box today . This is the famous Box railway tunnel that Brunel designed and built to connect Bristol to London. The classically designed facade is quite magnificent. The story goes that Brunel designed the angle of the tunnel so that every year on his birthday the sun shines through the tunnel which is nearly two miles long.
It all took five years to complete, starting in 1836 and nearly two hundred lives were lost in its construction. When the two ends of the tunnels met in the middle they were only two inches out of line. I must read more about it as I think there are also anti- chambers off the tunnel where the Royal Family could have hidden during the War. Fascinating! And Grandma enjoyed her birthday cake too!
