Kihitara or Red Damselfly
This is a first for me - I have never managed to photograph a damselfly before. When I looked in my insect book it has a near identical photo so I am sure of the identification.
I got a bit distracted in the insect book as one does, and learned that dragonflies rest with their wings open and a damselfly rests with the wings closed along the body. And it is smaller and more slender - just 3 to 3.5 cm long. The red and the blue damselfly are native to New Zealand.
Now I want to find a blue one.
