History and Stones

He requested History and she requested Stones, so History and Stones is what we did. We managed many, many stones and history spanning 5,000 years. Not bad in one day! It helped that we had a lovely day – still and warm and lots of sunshine, if a little hazy at times.


We started at the Roman Wall and wandered the Wall and the Fort at Housesteads and a couple of other places. Then we moved on to Lanercost Priory (and the café of course) and wandered the ruins. A circuitous route across to the North Lakes with lots of mountain views (well there would have been if it hadn’t been so hazy). And we arrived at Castlerigg Stone Circle. Impressive, even at the end of the day when there was little light left, and for a time there was no one else there (amazing!). Then a swarm of youngsters arrived and we watched the wonderful performance of someone trying to get them altogether for a group photo. Then we left. Finally, on the way home we brought things right up to date with a quick look at one of Andy Goldsworthy’s Pinfolds in Bolton. 

And home. What a day. And brilliant to spend it with such lovely people. It has been a delight to show them round this part of the country.
