Great Lady

Whilst at Gawthorpe Hall earlier in the week, we visited the Textile Exhibition. Mrs D was delighted to see that part of the display focused on this lady Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth.
Rachel K-S was a leading light in the Girl Guides, a member of the GG council in 1915, became the first County Commissioner for North East Lancs in 1917. She held this post for over 30 years. At a rally held at Gawthorpe Hall in 1919 there were 800 Guides. Combining her love of textiles with her Guiding, it was probably no surprise she was appointed Imperial Heraldry Advisor for the Girl Guide movement in 1925. At her suggestion Guides introduced Standards to represent each area. The N.E.Lancs Standard was her personal standard and is the only one that does not have the Girl Guide motto "Be Prepared" on it. Her motto was "Kynd Kynne Knawne Kepe" (Kind kin know and keep) and is carved above the front door of Gawthorpe Hall. Fascinating story of an amazing lady. If you get the chance this makes a visit to the Hall even more interesting.
(Mrs D recently received her 20 year award as a Guide Leader).
