In 1986 Glasgow showed it's support for the campaign to free Nelson Mandela by renaming St. Georges Place in his honour, much to the annoyance of staff in the South African consulate there.
In 1993 he came in person to Glasgow to collect the Freedom of the City which had been awarded to him during his time in prison. I'm very proud to say I was there to cheer him.
