Visitor On The Doorstep

Beginning in the 1880s up until WWII hoboes placed marking on fences, posts, sidewalks, buildings, trestles, and railroads to aid them and others of their kind in finding help or steering clear of trouble spots.  My favorite one is a simple drawing of a cat (see Extras) to indicate where a "kind lady" lived, one who might provide a meal for the homeless traveler.  The cat might be painted on the house's gate or scratched into a nearby tree.

The reason this ties into my deer blip is that I think one of them has carved an apple somewhere on the back side of my apartment telling the other deer that there's a sucker kind lady inside who is a soft touch and has a supply of apples.   I'm not really sure what's happening but the word does seem to be out at least to this little one, its twin and their mother.  No, I'm not feeding a whole herd -- just those three, and not every time they show up -- honest.
