Rule of Thumb

Did you know that the saying 'Rule of Thumb' comes from the time when it was legal for men in England to beat their wives as long as the stick they used was no thicker than their thumb.

So says Mr Blogs. He claims he heard it on Radio 4 so it must be true.

This was today's Point to Ponder in the studio.

We're not all convinced. There's a faction that claims it was a pre Roman expression based on the thumb being used as a unit of measurement.

So in order to ponder I went for a walk which is where I found this lonely little lady.
