How did the first people decide who would be the first to try a new find?

Easy now when you go to the supermarket, but I wouldn't have a clue out in the wilderness. Same as berries, I tried what I thought was a blueberry growing in my garden, it tasted rather horrible but I survived to be able to tell people to avoid them.
