Surgery day
Today was my long surgery day. Just gotten home to a lovely dinner and a glass of wine. I was operating today with various routine procedures, before an emergency came in from the overnight emergency centre. A 14 year old dog had crashed last night and been resuscitated as a result of collapsing cartilage in her larynx, essentially suffocating her. She had been suffering from a progressive laryngeal paralysis - a condition which mean't as she was taking a breath, the pressure was collapsing her larynx/voice box. So, today I helped to perform a laryngeal tieback or 'Hobday' surgery. Its a complex procedure involving opening the larynx. It's actually a simple concept, it's just that there are an awful lot of important structures that you don't want to be upsetting in the throat area!!! She has recovered remarkably and is a completely different dog to the suffering animal she was this morning... very cool!
P.S sometimes after these long days I get back and just find the nearest thing to take a photo of... today, it was the Vegemite!
