Holy Cross Church

Back Blip

I spent a really enjoyable day with a friend. We had hoped to have lunch in the tearoom by the canal at Thrupp but unfortunately they had a power cut, so we were forced into the local pub instead :)
After lunch we walked along the canal and explored two churches. This one was open, which is rare nowadays and the second one, although closed is famous for a being very close to the scene of one of the worst railway disasters in this country.
Apparently, on Christmas eve in 1874 a long passenger train became derailed at Shipton on Cherwell and 34 poor people died.
