Life in a Northern Town

Back Blip - Calving

Another day where I could Blip 20 photos - we were up early to board the Valdez Spirt, for a full day of sailing in Prince William Sound. Sea otters, sea-lions, bald headed eagles, whales, ice-bergs, waterfalls and calving glaciers. Amazing from beginning to end, and with delicious chowder thrown in too. It was John's birthday, he had a very special day.

The Meares glacier was furiously calving, I managed to video one huge chunk breaking off, and grab some shots too - impossible to convey the scale and the sheer power of the energy released. It was a privilege to watch, although the calving rate is faster than normal so it might be something we see far too much of across the world from now on.

More pasta, a slightly scary encounter with a local who had some bizarre ideas about The Queen (some other locals apologised to us and asked us not to judge the town on that particular individual), much wondering how people who live here manage to buy a new fridge when they need one, and another early night ready for the drive north.

If you like glaciers and waterfalls, my Flickr album is here.
