Ceolfrith- St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth
St Peter's, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland was built in AD 674 by Benedict Biscop and is one of the oldest churches in Britain, where Christians have gathered for more than 1300 years. Founded in Saxon times during the great age of Northumbria 'Celtic' Christianity.
It was in Monkwearmouth, St Peter's monastery that St Bede began his monastic life.
Wearmouth-Jarrow was the first place in England to house coloured window glass, after its founder Benedict Biscop brought glaziers to the region from Italy.
The glass featured above is (part of) Ceolfrith. One of three modern stained glass windows by L. C. Evetts after WWII in the north wall of the north aisle of the nave (a later addition to the church). The other two windows feature St Hilda and Benedict Biscop.
St Ceolfrith succeeded St Biscop at Wearmouth monastery on the latter's death in AD 689.
Hope I haven't bored you to death.
