Walk to/from Work. No 1.

Back to work today after my long summer break and it's good to be back! I do love my job. even if it does mean less time for photography.

It's Mono Monday and for once I checked to see what the theme was; Favourite places. This photo was taken on Brandon Hill, a park in the middle of Bristol, it's a great place to walk the dog, have a picnic or if you are so inclined, sunbathe. However, the main reason why Brandon Hill is one of my favourite places is it's history.

Brandon Hill is probably one of the oldest municipal parks in the country if not the world, the land was granted to the council in 1174. The park has always been a popular site for public meetings (the Chartists held regular meetings here) and 'riotous behaviour'. Bristol's first police station was built here so that the 'good' people of Clifton would not be  harassed by the 'masses'. In 1832 Brandon Hill was the site chosen for the Great Reform Dinner, but the party was gatecrashed by a 'mob' who stole the food and rolled the casks of booze down the hill to be consumed elsewhere.

On top of the hill is Cabot's Tower which offers amazing views of the city  Originally, it was planned to have a large statue of Edward Colston on top,  but fortunately this was dismissed, despite the wishes of the Bristol elite. Edward Colston, especially today, is a controversial subject in Bristol and I'm sure will feature in a future blip.
