Waterfall of the Gods
Backblip
Our last port of call in Iceland was Akureyri where we went on a tour called Jewels of the North. This was our worst weather day which was a shame as it didn't show the spectacular scenery in its best light. The most significant place visited was the waterfall at Godafoss. Iceland converted to Christianity in 1,000 and the Lawspeaker threw his Norse god statues into the waterfall, giving it its name meaning Waterfall of the Gods. The river here falls from a height of 12 metres over a width of 30 metres. The sound of the water was amazing.
We also went to the thermal field of Namaskaro which has bubbling purple and yellow sulphur cauldrons and a rather pungent smell! At Dimmuborgir we could walk through a huge lava labyrinth, you can see people looking tiny in the middle of this in my photo postcard in Extras. From here you can see Lake Myvatn which is surrounded by the craters of Skutustadir, also in Extras.
I've wanted to visit Iceland for ages, and it lived up to my expectations.
