Time Travel In Denmark - Adventures with Vikings!

Today I continued my journey south and left Sweden, crossing the 'Malmö' (Öresund) bridge to Denmark. This afternoon I met up with fellow-blipper Emmy and her three famous dogs, Hero, Gollum and Biscuit. We had met them the first time when we passed through Denmark last year so I was excited to see them again!

Emmy had suggested a visit the archeological Open Air Museum, 'Land of Legends'. This is a scientific AND a tourist site on 106 acres, deep in the Danish countryside:

"Land of Legends comprises reconstructions of an Iron Age village and sacrificial bog (200 BC to 200 AD), a Viking market place (900 AD), a Stone Age camp-site (5000 BC), an 18th-century farmstead and various grave monuments.

Each summer, many every-day families spend a week of their holidays in the Iron Age village, the farm cottages and the Stone Age camp-site. They dress in period costume and take on the role of inhabiting the reconstructed areas, while trying to live by utilizing the techniques of the past."

It had been raining a lot in the morning so it was wet walking around, but thankfully we didn't get rained on. We gave the dogs a long walk and explored Viking, Iron Age, Bronze Age, Stone Age and Ice Age settlements. We even had a picnic/fika in a Stone Age hut! (Bottom left) We saw an ancient breed of sheep but missed out on the wild boars. We ended up at an area of 18th century farm cottages where artisans demonstrate the traditional crafts. The costumes shown in the picture are all made on site, for the participants to wear while they are living out life in one of the settlements.

It was a fantastic afternoon and I think I may have to return to some corners of the site we didn't have time for.

We sadly had to say our goodbyes and I headed west, driving about another hour and ended up at a campsite just before the Great Belt Bridge (also called Great Belt Fixed Link), linking the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen, opened for road traffic in 1998. Personally, I love it more than the Malmö bridge! Last year Dolly and I stopped for a picnic here on our drive north and I was very jealous of those who were camping at this site right by the bridge!

I arrived just in time to get set up and then enjoyed a picnic dinner while watching the sunset. A perfect ending to a fabulous day!
