Today I put in the solid day without interruptions which was necessary in order to prepare the lab class for my day of the PhD course tomorrow. However, I took a break to visit the remains of the Imperial Baths complex just east of my hotel. Started in the fourth century, it was never finished and ended up as barracks. There is a labyrinth of underground tunnels and some massive walls round the main hot bath area. Unfortunately there's a lot pf scaffolding and plastic hiding half of the remains, but enough is clear and there is a cunningly placed display panel allowing you to visualise how it once was (might have been!)
Just in time to go out for the workshop wine tasting and dinner, I finished preparing my materials and got them checked over by my student. So I was feeling good and able to taste all the wonderful Riesling on offer. However, it was rather too subtle for me. And I've still not had any decent beer!
