Hopetoun House and Outlander

Now I must confess I have never watched Outlander (television series set in Scotland around the 18th century in castles and grand houses) so I was somewhat bemused visiting Hopetown House today to see a group of foreign visitors huddled around a television screen with a guide pointing out to them various locations where scenes had been shot.

“This is the Red Drawing Room…this is where Jamie rode up the main driveway.”

I was even more surprised to learn that they were on an organised tour of all the localities where Outlander is filmed and these tours take place three times a week!

Extra photo shows the Red Drawing Room featured in Outlander.

Hopetoun House, set in 6,000 acres of land on the outskirts of Edinburgh was redesigned by William Adam in the 18th century and is one of the gems of Scottish architecture.

The reason for todays visit had nothing to do with Outlander but rather to see an exhibition by a group of artists, called Heartwood .
Four artists have made work in direct response to this historic house and it has been placed in locations throughout the house as well as in the gallery.
Well, it blends in so well with the surroundings that I think I can safely say that 90 per cent of visitors, no, more like 95 per cent, never noticed it.

This is a shame because the work is beautiful, subtle and thought provoking.  Unfortunately unless you have a degree in Fine Art the chances are that it would pass over your head.
