Shocker in the garden

Imagine my friend M's shock when she came across this 'monster' while she was trimming the fuchsias in her garden. It was about four inches long and the thickness of her little finger and turned out to be the caterpillar of an elephant hawkmoth. Those aren't giant eyes on the side of it's 'head' but just clever marks to warn off would-be predators.
