MORTAL MAN.

This sculpture by Evelyn Herring 1960, has a permanent place in the orchard area of Jesus college. Sited under the canopy of a large tree, the bronze figure is hunched and inward focused. It turns it's back on it's situation and also on any spectators. Mortal Man is intensely melancholy and it's setting in the intimate but natural space beneath the tree feels necessary.
