Whoosh!
She's late. And irritated. It took just a bit longer than usual to get dressed because the choice of dress had to be perfect, the hair just so and the make-up flawless. It isn't that much of an effort for her to enhance her natural beauty, but still, she's late.
The importance of this day is weighing heavily on her mind. She pivots around and smiles fleetingly at the stranger on the bench who just snuck her picture and is quickly covering the small point and shoot camera. "Do you know what time it is?", she asks. "Yes", answers the stranger, "it is just past 1:00." She doesn't reply and steps into the elevator that has just opened. Her heart quickens.
She has been suspecting for a few weeks that some very big changes are underway, both in her body and her life. In about half an hour she'll know for sure and she'll be blissfully happy. She'll leave the doctor's office and head over to the restaurant to have lunch with her husband and break the momentous news to him. When they planned on a lunch date last night, he had no idea about her slight detour today. When she tells him, they'll laugh, get tearful and order a bottle of champagne, but she'll just stick to drinking water.
I took an hour off from working at home and spying on the builders and spied on the elevator goers in this medical building while waiting for Mr. M. If you're wondering how I know all this about a person I've never met: late, anxious, no medical building pass, rubbed her stomach, wedding ring, got off on the 5th floor (mostly gyno/obstretics-elevator went straight to it, came back down empty to the next person waiting) It could of course be a number of things she came in for today but that's the one that sounds the best to me.
