Durdle Door

The forecast was much improved for today, so we set off in good time to visit Corfe Castle.  We had heard it can be very busy, and as the English schools are now on holiday we had n early start  We had a lovely journey there, parked quite easily and walked to the village and castle.  It was busy with visitors, but there was also lots to see, including a medieval village re-enactment.  BB had a spy trail to do, which provided a focus for his exploration of the castle.  Corfe Castle was the home of the Banks family, who built Kingston Lacy, prior to it being built.  Just for a change we had a lovely picnic, sitting in the sunshine in the grounds of the castle.

After lunch we wandered  round the village and came across a playpark and fitness equipment which kept BB entertained for ages.  Eventually we got moving again and decided to head to the coast. We parked at Lulworth??, and walked down to the cove.  It was packed, so TT consulted his map and we went for a  walk along the coastal path which took us high above Lulworth Cove.  It was lovely looking down.  The fields we walked through were full of lovely wild flowers.  We took a long flight of steps down the cliff which took us to the cove.  It was much quieter than when we had arrived, and it was lovely walking round.  We ended up back where we started, and continued our walk to Durdle Door – we did not take the tourist route – we took a route where we met no one else!  Our route was via Scratchy Bottom, which made us all laugh!  We approached Durdle Door from the opposite direction to everyone else.  As it was rather late in the day we didn’t go down to the beach which was a great disappointment to BB.  Instead we admired the views and headed back to the car, as we then had to drive home.

We hoped to re-visit Durdle Door, but didn’t make it.  Since we’ve been home BB has told everyone that this is his favourite place from our time in Dorset.  It is also his Auntie E’s favourite place in the world!

Here is the "door".
