Volunteer Sunflower Extras

I have never seen this before.  I have a volunteer sunflower that is about 4 1/2 feet tall with a small flower- maybe 3 inches across.  I have left it out because the goldfinches were eating the seeds.  Today I noticed these tiny flowers coming out where the leaves are.  Odd?  Seems so to me.  I should have left this until tomorrow- Flower Friday, but here we are.
