Erratic rock

This is one of two isolated, large boulders sitting on the golf course above Hollins Hall.  The other one is bigger, flat-topped and is a fine place to sit and survey the valley -even though the view is somewhat occupied by Bradford (sorry Bradford, only kidding). Actually Bradford doesn't look so bad from up there. Lister's Mill is beautiful in morning sunshine.

I've always presumed that these rocks are glacial erratics.  My wife argues that they are decorative features shipped in by the golf course but, since the bigger, and not very decorative, one must weigh about 50 tons I think the order of probability is glacial erratic > godzilla > golf course.

Glacial features are fascinating: especially to a southerner who didn't expect to be walking his dogs amongst drumlins, moraines and erratics on a daily basis.  As far as I can tell, a branch of the Wharfedale glacier (don't ask me which glaciation) flowed through the gap between Rombald's moor and the Chevin (over our house) and was likely responsible for the erratics in question.  They are certainly lower than the moraines on Hawksworth moor which mark the lateral limits of the ice. 

Don't start me on drumlins. They've become an obsession.
