Here's looking at you.....

I snapped this picture of a statue in front of the Queen's University McClay Library because it says something about the new, emerging phenomenon of street art here in this place I call home. Most people will not know that it is called Eco and was created by the Breton artist Marc Didou. It is an imposing piece, made of bronze and is 2.5m tall. It came by way of Didou's response to his investigation of digital imaging techniques and is his way of  representing the reflection of a head refracted in water and the sonic echo used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While knowing its context helps my understanding, I receive it, as a layperson, in a different, less analytical fashion. Put simply, it looks great! Sometimes we can read too much into art, and while study is an excellent discipline, often we need simply to stop, look and reflect and ask ourselves, what does this say, mean, represent to me, here and now. Art is experienced in both its creation as well as its appreciation. Take time to take it in!
