A talk on Britain's lost cycleways...
A wonderful talk by Carlton Reid. He has been researching the lost cycleways of Great Britain, routes that were constructed in the 1930's.
Made of concrete, built along the side of trunk roads of the era, many still exist as footpaths, service roads or parking spaces.
One of the most interesting aspects is the social geography these routes parallel.. Many were built along roads which connected industrial areas with working class neighbourhoods.
The plans are straight from a Dutch specification, it followed closely the design of the main Haarlem to Amsterdam road with precise widths and specs followed.
