Marple Locks

Today's the day ............................. to go down

Just after the Macclesfield Canal joins the Peak Forest Canal at Marple, you find yourself with the prospect of a flight of sixteen locks to navigate your way through within a distance of only a few hundred yards.

Locks have a seemingly endless fascination for those who don't actually have to operate them - so there will always be a number of spectators and onlookers ready to offer advice when necessary (and often when not!)

And if all this excitement wasn't enough, after all the exertions of emptying locks and opening gates, just around the corner the splendid Marple Aqueduct carries the waterway almost a hundred feet across a steeply wooded ravine carved by the River Goyt ..............................
