Local dish!

Gâche Mela pronounced 'Gosh Meylah' is a local apple cake which is delicious served hot or cold and freezes well! It can be made with suet instead of margerine but is more fattening and heavier consistency. It's one of the islands favourites. Here's the recipe!

3lbs Cooking Apples
14oz Granulated Sugar
½ level tsp Salt
6oz Margerine
3 eggs
14oz SR Flour

Peel and roughly chop apples into small pieces with sugar. Add eggs. Mix flour, margarine and salt until like breadcrumbs and add to apple and sugar mix. Put mix into greased dishes.
Cook @ 180 or gas 5 for 1 hour (or till golden brown). Serve with cream or ice cream. Cut into squares and freeze! Enjoy!
